Looking for some good worship music to listen to when you wake up? This posts recommends some of the best classic and contemporary Christian songs to help you start your day in the right frame of mind.

The absolute best way to start your day

When we first wake up in the morning, it doesn’t take too long before our minds are filled with all kinds of thoughts.

Some of us think about our email or messages and reach for our phones, and others create to mental to-do list of all they need to do.

Some others try to recall their dreams while others immediately think about breakfast.

As I talk about in this post, some of these things are definitely important to consider if you want to have a good day. The question is: should they be the priority?

I think not.

As Christians, the absolute best way to start the day is not to worry, not to reach for our phones, not to go grab a bite immediately but to start it with praise and worship to God.

Don’t believe me? Well, let’s look at what the Bible says.

What the Bible says about how we should start our day

While the Bible doesn’t explicitly tell us how to start the day, it does give us some really good clues.

In Matthew 6:33 (NIV) Jesus says this:

So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.

But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

This verse tells us not to worry but to seek God first and He will attend to all our needs.

We tend to think about this verse in the general context of life, but it definitely also applies to how we should go about living each day.

In other words, when we wake up we need to seek God first before we do anything else.

I know this may not the easiest thing to do, especially if you’re used to starting your day in a different way (I struggle with this too).

But while it may take some time to change, it certainly isn’t impossible and it certainly is absolutely necessary.

How we can praise and worship God in the morning

Starting your day with worship and praise to the one who woke you up is like building a good foundation for all that other stuff to go on top.

So, how can we start praising and worshiping God in the morning?

Well, praising and worshiping God comes in different forms, with the most common being prayer and song.

Prayer is great and cannot be replaced. Like I talk about in this post, it’s a great way to verbally thank God for waking you up and to ask Him for guidance and protection throughout the day.

But also listening and singing along to worship music takes things to another level.

Psalms 59:16 – 17 (ERV) says this:

But I will sing about your strength. I will rejoice in your love every morning. You have been my place of safety, the place I can run to when troubles come. I will sing praises to you, my source of strength. You, God, are my place of safety. You are the God who loves me!

Do you need to sing to worship?

Maybe you’re wondering: do I need to sing? Well, in the article ‘Why do Christians Sing?’ the author says this:

“Singing has a unique way of bringing our heart, soul, mind, and strength together to focus entirely and completely on God.

In an age of distraction, singing grabs the attention of all our senses and focuses us on God.

As we pour out our hearts in song, He is lifted up, and He graciously lifts us up with Him. What better reason could there be to sing?”

I love that!

While you don’t have to sing, singing is a wonderful way to worship God.

NB: You may not always be able to sing aloud (maybe you have roommates or other people who may be still sleeping) but whenever you can, take the opportunity!

And don’t worry about how you sound — it’s not about what people think of your singing, it’s about you and God!

Below are a mix of popular classic and contemporary Christian songs (as well as some gems I recommend) that help you start your day in the right frame of mind.

Lord I Lift Your Name on High – Maranatha!

The name says it all. Sing this catchy song and offer praises to God’s holy name.

He Knows My Name – Maranatha!

When we have busy days we sometimes forget to reach out to friends and family or even to care for ourselves!

But despite how busy we can get, God is never too busy for us. He doesn’t only think about us during the day, He knows our thoughts, He sees our tears and He listens when you call on Him.

Remembering this can be incredibly comforting throughout the day.

Order My Steps – The Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir

Based on Psalms 119:133, this song is a prayer all on its own.

Singing this song in the morning is a wonderful way to ask God to lead and direct your every action of the day.

You Have Been So Good to Me – Paul Baloche

Of all the Christian songs I’ve heard this one has to be one of my favorites.

God has been so so good to all of us that sometimes I just don’t know how to thank Him. Ever feel that way?

The lyrics of this song may perfectly express how you feel in those moments.

Goodness of God

I love You Lord

Oh Your mercy never fails me

All my days

I’ve been held in Your hands

From the moment that I wake up

Until I lay my head

I will sing of the goodness of God

Goodness of God – Bethel Music

The lyrics speak for themselves! God’s goodness is indeed worth singing about. This well-known and well-loved song is such a great way to start the day.

In Christ Alone

The world offers us many things to place our hope in when we start our day — from daily horoscopes to tarot cards to even the people around us. But our hope should be always and only in Christ.

There are so many beautiful versions of this song, but this is one of my favs.

10, 000 Reasons – Matt Redman

The sun comes up
It’s a new day dawning
It’s time to sing Your song again
Whatever may pass
And whatever lies before me
Let me be singing
When the evening comes

10 000 Reasons – Matt Redman

How many reasons are there to praise God? Matt Redman says 10 000! (That’s more than I have the patience to count to.)

This is a perfect song to start your day.

There’s also a studio version of this song but I love the live version because you can hear maybe hundreds of other people singing along.

You get a different but good kind of feeling when you sing along with so many other people.

Oceans (Where Feet May Fail) – Hillsong UNITED

You call me out upon the waters

The great unknown where feet may fail

And there I find You in the mystery

In oceans deep my faith will stand

Oceans – Hillsong UNITED

We’ve all heard this one. It’s one of the most popular Christian songs and for a good reason.

Every time we start a new day — regardless of our plans — we have no idea how it will end.

The words of this song remind us to keep our faith and trust in God wherever we may find ourselves — in deep oceans or wherever He may call us.

Resurrecting – Elevation Worship

This is a great song that reminds us of how Jesus died for us and invites us to reclaim Him as the King of our lives.

Plus, waking up is kinda like resurrecting isn’t it? Or is it just me? 😅

God Can Do Anything – The Collingsworth Family

This is another one of my favorites. This song is a great reminder that we need not worry about what we may face throughout the day because we serve a powerful God who can do ANYTHING.

Through the Fire – The Crabb Family

This is a great song to build up your faith and trust in God if you anticipate a difficult day ahead.

Maybe you’re anxious about something that will happen, maybe you’re dreading going to that job or that class or that doctor’s visit.

Whatever it is, this song can help put those anxious thoughts to rest by reminding you that God will be with you and take you through the fire again and again.

Reggae Christian Songs

It’s Me Again Jah – Luciano

Look around Your world today

Oh God and you will see

Pharisees and backbiters taken up in vanity

But I know you control my destiny

And from you all blessings flow

From yesterday even today and tomorrow

It’s Me Again Jah – Luciano

The lyrics of this song make a beautiful morning prayer. If you’re a reggae fan, you’ll love this song.

Praise & Worship

As a Caribbean girl, this medley is definitely one of my favs. So if you like Caribbean music and reggae, you’d love this praise medley too!

It’s fast-paced but fun and will really get you pumped and ready for the day.

Thanks and Praise – Chronixx

Dry your tears my friend
You’re blessed and highly favored
Don’t take it for granted
Remember your garbage [is] a next man treasure

Thanks and Praise – Chronixx

Regardless of beliefs, almost everyone can tell you just how important it is to show gratitude.

We can express gratitude all throughout the day, but the morning is always a great time to get the ball going. Just listen to the words of this song and you’ll remember all that you have to be grateful for.

23rd Psalm – Buju Banton

The 23rd Psalm, also known as the Shepherd’s Psalm, is definitely one of the most popular prayers from the book of Pslams.

This song sings the words of this psalm to a slow but enjoyable reggae beat.

R&B Christian Songs

God is – Kayne West

I know I won’t forget all He’s done
He’s the strength in this race that I run

God Is – Kayne West

Our belief about God has a major impact on how we rely on Him and how we expect Him to help us throughout the day.

For example, when we remember that God is wise and all-knowing, we can become more comfortable in seeking his guidance when making decisions — big or small. So, who is God to you?

Not sure? This song is a perfect reminder of everything God is.

Some helpful tips for starting your day with worship songs

  • Don’t disturb others

As much as it’s true that everyone can benefit from some good Christian music, no one’s going to appreciate it if they have to jump from their sleep because your music is too loud.

To prevent yourself from disturbing others get yourself a good pair of headphones!

  • Focus on the lyrics

It’s easy to get lost in the music and beat of a song, but when it comes to Christian music it’s vital to take time to listen to the lyrics to really put your mind in the right place.

As Christians, the absolute best way we can start our day is with praise and worship to the one who woke us up another day.
